Postdoc position in Biochar / Soil Ecology at Wageningen University. We are looking for a postdoc to study the effects of biochar on soil biota and plant-soil interactions. Future energy demands may be met through pyrolosis of biomass, leading to `waste` products such as biochar. Biochar, similar to charcoal, has unique biochemical properties; notably being highly stable against decay. Therefore, recent studies have suggested that adding biochar to soils may sequester carbon and improve soil quality. However, the ecological impact of biochar addition is unclear and subsequently this project aims to address this with the appointment of two postdocs. The present position focuses on the effects of soil amendment with biochar on nutrient availability and resulting plant/soil and plant/plant interactions. The project is centered around a unique 4-year field experiment in a nature restoration area in the Netherlands. The postdoc will maintain and run the field site, design and execute experiments that quantify changes in nutrient availability and soil-plant interactions using state-of-the-art ecological and soil science techniques (e.g. 13C and 15N tracing), and co-organise workshops to disseminate research findings to the scientific community.

Description of the work
Applications are invited for 2+2 year postdoctoral research position in the research group of Professor Eva Hellstrom-Lindberg and Guest Professor Sten Eirik Jacobsen at the Center for Hematology and Regenerative Medicine (HERM).
The main focus of the position will be to conduct research projects aiming to unravel the cellular and molecular defects in the hematopoietic system of patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Hellstrom-Lindberg and Jacobsen have a strong track record in related studies (Pellagatti A et al, Proc Natl Acd Sci USA 2007; Tehranchi et al,N Engl J Med 2010).
Applicants should have a PhD in a biology related area with significant experience in MDS, leukemia or normal hematopoiesis research, and a strong publication track record including recent high impact publications. Experience of advanced flow cytometry is an advantage.

Job description

Metal gratings occur in several applications in the semiconductor industry. Since metals are important for wiring on integrated circuits (ICs), metal periodic structures (gratings) occur naturally in process monitoring for lithographic production of ICs, for instance as a sequence of vias or contact holes or as reference targets during after-etch inspection. A second application regards the masks used in lithographic IC production, where a full clip is repeated many times over the mask. For these applications, scattering by metal gratings at optical frequencies is an interesting modeling topic as it covers wide parameter ranges, such as the period of the grating versus the wavelength of the source. Also, several observables, e.g. reflection and transmission coefficients, are of interest. The numerical analysis of metal gratings is particularly challenging since metals support wave phenomena, e.g. plasmon waves, that are not encountered in purely dielectric media.

for activities in the Helmholtz-Programme “Regenerative Therapies and Active Biomaterials†. This is initially a 3-years fixed term contract. 

You will develop polymer libraries for biomedical applications utilizing combinatorial and high-throughput approaches by the application robotic synthesizers. You will be responsible for the benchwork and, furthermore, you will actively participate in the publication of the results, preparation of patents, and attracting additional funding. Depending on your performance, the position is designed to become a group leader position.

You have a strong background in both organic chemistry and polymer chemistry with a Ph.D. in Polymer Sciences, chemistry, or likewise and are familiar with state-of-the- art polymerization techniques. You possess practical experience in automated and combinatorial synthesis of polymers or organic molecules and are familiar with programming of such robotic setups. Beneficially you have experience with the screening and characterisation of such materials in high-throughput setups or are familiar with software for the statistical design of experiments (DOE).
