Position as PhD Research Fellow (Stipendiat SKO 1017) available at the Department of Biology, Microbial Evolution Research Group.
The fellowship is for a period of up to 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work. Starting date no later than 01.10.2011. The project will be at the Microbial Evolutionary Research Group, which is a strategic research programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

Job/ project description:
Applications and inquiries are invited from qualified, motivated and enthusiastic students wish-ing to pursue a PhD degree in microbial evolution, with particular emphasis on Radiolaria bi-ology, phylogeny and genomics. Major goal for the research is to develop and optimize single cell whole genome amplification (SCWGA) methods for single cells of unculturable eukaryo-tes, partially sequence the nuclear and mitochondrial genome of radiolarian species in order to provide data for studies of gene and genome organisation of Radiolaria, and comparative studies of related eukaryote groups such as Foraminifera and Cercozoa.
Requirements/qualifications:
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in biology and have considerable ex-periences with SCWGA, phylogenetic methods and knowledge of standard molecular and bioinformatic techniques. In addition, it is required that the applicant has extended knowledge about microbial eukaryotes, preferably Radiolaria and other groups among Rhizaria. The ap-plicant must have serious research interests in microbial evolution and excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience with any of the following topics is an advantage: ge-nomics, overview of the systematics of protists, microcapillary isolation techniques and mi-croscopy.
The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.
The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. An approved plan for the research training, including a project outline, must be submitted no later than two months after taking up the position, and the admission must be approved within three months.
