PhD position 2012 Computational Geoscience available at CERE. Department of Informatics and Mathematical Modeling and Center for Energy Resources Engineering, Technical University of Denmark, has an opportunity to provide a 3 year-PhD project entitled:
Numerical modeling of geothermal reservoirs through geophysical, geostatistical and flow data
This project is financed by The Danish Council for Strategic Research and DTU Informatics. Preferred starting date is 1. February 2012.
This project will develop new technology to improve planning of energy storage in geothermal reservoirs through high-quality experiments and modelling. The technology will be based on a multidisciplinary approach combining small scale geochemistry/rock physics with large scale seismic inversion and history matching of production data. The focus will be on Danish geothermal reservoirs, because heat storage is likely to be the missing link in planning sustainable energy production in Denmark, where several sources of energy should interplay. Energy sources as waste incineration and wind are not controlled by immediate energy demands. By storing energy at low heat loss in hot aquifers we obtain an effective interplay between different sources of energy, so that the degree of coverage with sustainable energy can increase at an affordable cost.
Eligibility
- A physics or engineering degree (M.Sc.) with mathematics, numerical analysis or computer science as an important element
- Good programming skills, preferably in Matlab, C and FORTRAN
- Good writing skills in English
Application Deadline : January 8, 2012

PhD positions, At the
Department of Physics andAstronomy of Ghent University a position for a PhD student is available.
The aim of this PhD project is computational study of mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias in the fibrotic heart. Sudden cardiac death due to cardiac arrhythmias is the leading cause of mortality in the industrialized world. Some of the most important factors underpinning arrhythmias is alterations of the electrical properties of cardiac tissue due to an increased number of non-conducting cardiac cells (fibroblasts) and changes in some other properties of cardiac cells called remodelling. The mechanisms underlying the onset of arrhythmias under these conditions have not yet been identified. In this project we will address this problem using integrative computer modelling on cell, tissue and whole organ level.
Profile
We seek a motivated candidate with broad interest in biophysics, integrative computational and mathematical biology, biomedical engineering. Prior experience in cardiac modelling is an advantage, but not necessary.
Your work will include numerical integration of systems of ordinary and partial differential equations describing various regimes of wave propagation in the heart with the aim to identify mechanisms underlying arrhythmias in fibrotic cardiac tissue. Although most of the programs are already available at our group, a working

The University of Melbourne’s Department of Forest and Ecosystem Science in partnership with the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) have established a new $10M research program that will examine the effects of climate, management, and disturbances on forest ecosystem processes at landscape scales.
We seek expressions of interest from prospective PhD students in the following research areas:
- Forest Biodiversity: quantify relationships between future fire regimes and risks to forest biodiversity (particularly fauna), structure and function.
- Forest Water: help identify key threats to future water security from forested catchments.
- Forest Carbon: contribute to mechanistic understanding of carbon stocks and fluxes in forested landscapes, including how carbon cycling varies with forest type, disturbance, and climate.
- Forest Vulnerability: improve understanding of how forest species and ecosystems respond to disturbance, management and climate.
- Forest Socio-Economic:impact of wildfires on community safety

PhD in Novel Aerospace Materials (Aerospace Engineering Department of Delft University of Technology in close collaboration with the Membrane Technology Group of the University of Twente)
Job description
Currently Delft University is collaborating with the Membrane Technology Group at the University of Twente (UTwente) on a project in which we explore novel, high-performance polymer architectures based on poly(ether-imide) and poly(ether-amide) chemistries as potential materials for high-pressure gas separation applications. In this project we will design and synthesise new monomers and polymers, investigate their thermo-mechanical properties and study their usefulness as films for a variety of gas separation applications (e.g. separation of CO2/CH4 and olefin/paraffin mixtures). You will not only be in charge of polymer synthesis and polymer characterisation but you will also assist with inventorying the membrane properties, which will be done in close collaboration with the UTwente.
