Currently the Department of Physics and Technology, University of Bergen, and Vestfold University College, have started activities within the “FOCAL” project.
The Forward Calorimeter (FoCAL) is one of the key upgrade projects for ALICE. FoCAL will make it possible to perform the electromagnetic measurements such as pi0 and photons, jet measurements and their correlations with respect to the central rapidity region.
The current plan is to install FOCAL during the next long stop of the LHC in 2018.The design of FoCAL represents great challenges, and will require detailed simulations and an intensive R & D programme within calorimeter construction and electronics.
Requirements/qualifications:
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Electronics, in the fields of analog and digital electronic design, programmable logic (VHDL/FPGA) , and preferably also ASIC design.
The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.
The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. An approved plan for the research training, including a project outline, must be submitted no later than two months after taking up the position, and the admission must be approved within three months.
