Open Positions
The 4 positions are offered within the context of the international joint project Future Cities Laboratory (FCL), which the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) will run conjointly for the next 4 years. In particular, the position will be part of the pilot interdisciplinary module entitled “Landscape and Ecology”, which will run under the Research Stream Urban Design Strategies and Resources of the ETH Zurich FCL in Singapore. The research module deals with the interface between advanced landscape design, modeling and simulation and urban hydrology, watershed modeling and hydrological ecosystem services. The case study is located along the Ciliwung River Catchment in the urban periphery of Jakarta in Java, Indonesia.
The 4 open positions are:
- 1 PhD position in Landscape and Environmental Planning
- 1 PhD position in Landscape Architecture Modeling and Visualizing
- 1 PhD position in Landscape Architecture and Urban Ecology
- 1 Senior Researcher in Landscape Architecture and Planning
1 PhD position in Landscape and Environmental Planning
The PhD project will focus on assessing the value of hydrological ecosystem services of selected reaches of the Ciliwung River under natural and designed river landscapes in the southern periphery of Jakarta. Based on eco-hydraulic model outputs and three-dimensional representation of the landscape, the PhD will set-up a suitable participative approach for valuing the ecological, economical, and social services provided under the different scenarios and investigate different institutional arrangements for securing the provision of the most required services in the long term including spatial planning and payment for ecosystem services.
Accordingly, the successful candidate working at the interface of the Landscape and Ecology Module and the FCL Simulation Platform, will need to have a good academic education (Master) in environmental sciences (quantitative), a strong background in economy and social empirical research, and an understanding in political sciences. Additional basic knowledge about landscape and ecological design is also to be expected. Experience with GIS and handling multivariable datasets and software combinations is certainly an asset. The successful applicant will be highly motivated for scientific research, have specific interest in the topic and appropriate background, have personal initiative, be comfortable with both team and independent work, and have good organizational Skills. Very good spoken and written command of the English language are required.

1 PhD position in Landscape Architecture Modeling and Visualizing
The PhD will focus on new methods of landscape architectural design pertaining to selected locations along the Ciliwung River based on hydraulic models using advanced 3D computing parameters linked to GIS. The goal is to develop three-dimensional landscape tools allowing for ecological and hydrodynamic simulation. Sectors of the River will be designed, modeled and visualized coupling hydrological data with advanced terrain-modeling techniques. The resulting landscape design will be used to qualify local cultural and economic requirements while taking into account hydraulic responses to extreme flood situations. The research will look more particularly at the dynamics of existing river landscapes in the periphery of Jakarta, proposing a set of remedial scenarios that take into account comparative social, cultural and ecological benefits for each place under study. Various landscape scenarios will modify land use patterns, using vegetation to improve environmental conductivity and provide shade for alternative “soft” transportation networks that will further serve an ecosystem service approach. The candidate will need to have a good academic education (Master) in architecture, urban planning or landscape architecture with an emphasis on large-scale landscape modeling and visualizing and a sound knowledge of 3D numerical methods. Additional knowledge in landscape and ecological design is to be expected. Experience with 3D GIS and handling multivariable datasets and software combinations is preferred. The applicant will be highly motivated for scientific research and have specific interest in the topic with the appropriate background, have personal initiative, be comfortable with both team and independent work, and have good organizational skills. Very good spoken and written command of the English language at an academic level are required.
1 PhD position in Landscape Architecture and Urban Ecology
The PhD project will focus on landscape architecture and urban ecology at specific locations along the Ciliwung watershed of Jakarta. The research will project a large metropolitan green corridor concept comprised of both natural and designed river landscape typologies at the southern periphery of the city. Prior Masters degree in architecture or landscape architecture with a demonstrated experience in large-scale landscape topology and urban design is required. Further knowledge of environmental horticulture for tropical regions would be appreciated. Accordingly, the successful candidate working at the interface of landscape and ecology will need to have a good academic education and a strong background in landscape architecture, urban studies and applied ecological design. The successful applicant will be highly motivated for scientific research, have specific interest in the topic and appropriate background, have personal initiative, be comfortable with both team and independent work, and have good organizational skills. Very good spoken and written command of the English language are required.
1 Senior Researcher in Landscape Architecture and Planning
The successful candidate will join a newly formed interdisciplinary research team, within which he/she will (i) supervise three PhD students developing landscape architectural strategies in urban riparian settings, visualizing landscape-water interaction scenarios using advanced 3D modeling techniques linked to GIS representation of numerical hydrologic simulations and quantifying and valuing hydrological ecosystem services, (ii) integrate their research in the research done by the rest of the research team working in watershed modeling, urban hydrology and water quality modeling, and (iii) coordinate the overall research project including data management and deliverables. The Senior Researcher will carry out research and also do some teaching in 3D GIS landscape modeling and visualizing techniques. Accordingly, the candidate will have a PhD degree with strong post-doctoral experience in 3D GIS pertaining to landscape topological modeling and visualizing. Sound knowledge about ecology, more particularly ecosystems services and hydrology as well as landscape architecture and planning is expected. Knowledge about statistical methods and GIS programming with multivariable datasets and 3D landscape modeling and visualizing programs is preferred.
