Overview of the role
Hypoxia is a key component of cancer pathology, and a wide range of cardiac, pulmonary, vascular and inflammatory diseases.
The hypoxia biology laboratory has discovered a series of enzymatic oxygen sensors that regulate transcriptional responses to hypoxia by post-translational hydroxylation of specific prolyl and asparaginyl residues in the transcription factor, hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) (1-3).
These oxygen sensors belong to a family of enzymes known as 2-oxoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases. Although several members of this family have been implicated in human disease, the roles they play in hypoxia signalling and pathological processes in vivo remains elusive. To facilitate discoveries in this area we aim to develop a generic transgenic vector for shRNA knockdown of 2-oxoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases.

We are looking to recruit up to five Postdoctoral scientists to work with Dr Jason Chin. The successful candidates will join Dr Chin’s expanding research programme, which includes the new Centre for Chemical & Synthetic Biology (CCSB). Postdoctoral Scientist – Stem Cell Biology at Paterson Institute for Cancer Research UK
A three year position, is available in the laboratory of Dr Georges Lacaud to study the molecular and cellular mechanisms of early haematopoietic development. In this context, we are focusing on the function of the transcription factor AML1/Runx1, a master regulator of haematopoietic development but also a frequent target of gene rearrangements and mutations in human leukemia. The in vitro differentiation system based on mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells and in vivo approaches will be used. Our ultimate goal is to use either ES cell differentiation or epigenetic reprogramming to generate transplantable blood cell populations. Selected references: Lancrin et al., (2009) Nature. The Fraunhofer IZI is coordinating a large collaborative project that aims at the identification and validation of biomarkers on the basis of the non-protein coding part of the human genome. The project focuses on diagnostic and prognostic questions of utmost relevance for patients and health economy.
