The School of Industrial Engineering and Management at the Royal Institute of Technology seeks a PhD student.

KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. KTH has 13 344 full-time equivalent students, of whom 6 955 are at Bachelor (first) level, while 5 545 are at Master (second) level. In addition, 1 314 are full-time equivalent students at doctoral studies (third) level and 3 900 employees.


Activities at School Industrial Engineering and Management cover the engineering, technological and economic knowledge necessary to be able to develop new products, material and production processes in a sustainable fashion as concerns technical management, financial profitability and the environment. One precondition for innovation and enterprise is the study and application of basic physical and chemical phenomena as well as the integration of new, often multidisciplinary technologies, methods and tools. Core knowledge areas include energy technology, industrial design and innovation, product and production development, materials development, micro and nano technology as well as industrial economics, organization and management.

The department of Production Engineering is engaged in research on manufacturing processes and systems. The division of Machine and Process Technology is driving research in process machine interaction including influence of materials on tool life, process monitoring and control, vibration analysis and control in machining systems, machine tool design and development etc.

Description of the research area
In order to strengthen its team for future research activities two PhD positions are now available at the division in the area of adaptive machine tools and machining processes. This research will address the challenges in design and development of adaptive machine tools with focus on dynamic properties and modular design. Objective of the research project is to develop modular machine tools with self-adaptive structural dynamic characteristics for improving productivity and flexibility in machining systems.

Qualifications/eligibility
The candidate shall have M.Sc./Master’s degree in Mechanical engineering with a specialization in mechatronics, production or similar. Experience in vibration analysis, machine design, modeling and simulation will be an advantage. The candidate should be highly motivated for research studies and capable of working independently. Excellent communication, team working and critical analysis abilities are very important for the job.

Employment
This appointment includes other department services in the form of assistance in teaching and labs for undergraduate and post graduate students with up to maximum 20% of the work time.
