Position as PhD Research fellow (Stipendiat SKO 1017) available at The Department of Informatics
The Department of Informatics and the Department of Biology at the University of Oslo are announcing two PhD positions within the field of bioinformatics and computational genomics under the umbrella of the Computational Life Science initiative (CLSi). The PhD Research Fellowship Ref.no. 2011/3806 is also part of this collaborative announcement.
CLSi is part of the Molecular Life Science interfaculty research area at UiO (MLS@UiO). CLSi is the first step towards establishing a leading interdisciplinary bioinformatics environment for the entire university. The idea is to promote research, services, education and collaboration within bioinformatics, biostatistics, and computational life sciences at UiO.The PhD positions are important in the effort to build a strong team to serve the needs of UiO when it comes to service, research and teaching in bioinformatics. CLSi is administrated from the Department of Informatics and headed by professor Nils D. Christophersen.
Common to both PhD positions is that they will be involved in projects aiming at improving analysis of high throughput sequencing (HTS) data. The two PhD candidates should work as a team – with one position being more informatics/algorithm oriented, while the other more application oriented. Both PhD projects will be carried out in close collaboration with scientists at the Department of informatics, the Department of Biology and the Norwegian High-Throughput Sequencing Centre (NSC). The supervision of the two candidates will be carried out by a group of scientists including both biologists and computer scientists.
The Department of Informatics (IFI) is one of nine departments belonging to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oslo. IFI is Norway’s largest university department for general education and research in Computer Science and related topics. You can read more about the Department here: http://www.ifi.uio.no The Department has near 1000 students on bachelor level, near 400 master students, and over 230 PhD students. The totall staff of the Department is close to 260 employees, about 150 of these are full time scientific positions: about 60 Professors and Associate Professors
The fellowships is for a period of up to 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work. Starting date no later than 01.10.2011.
Job description:
The successful candidate will be associated with the Biomedical research group at the Department of informatics, located in a brand new building. The group focuses on computational and statistical applications in the biological and medical sciences and its activities are mainly in the areas of bioinformatics and statistical genomics. It is associated with two Norwegian Centres of Excellence: Centre for Cancer Biomedicine (CCB) and Centre for Molecular Biology and Neuroscience (CMBN). The group collaborates extensively with scientists at Oslo University Hospital. Visitwww.ifi.uio.no/research/groups/bio for further information about the research group.
This PhD position will be involved in development and utilization of new and improved algorithms and tools for genome assembly, sequence read mapping, and sequence analysis. Software developed should be capable of handling the huge amounts of DNA sequence data generated from various sequencing technologies such as Roche 454, Illumina, ABI Solid and third generation sequencers (e.g. Pacific Biosciences). One goal will be to develop tools capable of combining data generated using different technologies. Another goal is to utilize different forms of parallelization and take advantage of high-performance computing facilities to enhance performance. The tools developed will in turn be used by the second PhD (see below).
Requirements:
The candidate must hold a MSc degree (or equivalent) in computer science or bioinformatics and demonstrate a keen interest in learning about molecular biology and genomics. Applicants should have a strong background in computational theory and be able to work with others to develop and implement new algorithms. Substantial programming experience is required. Knowledge and experience with DNA sequence analysis and genomics is an advantage.
The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.
The fellowship requires admission to research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. An aproved plan for the research training, including a project outline, must be submitted no later than two months after taking up the position, and the admission must be approved within three months.
