PhD in Health and Housing at Peninsula College of Medicine & Dentistry
PhD in Health and Housing at Peninsula College of Medicine & Dentistry. The European Centre for Environment in Human Health (part of the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry) is partnering with the University of Exeter, School of Biology to offer PhD in the area of epidemiology and the built environment to start in October 2011, based in Truro, Cornwall. The studentship will provide an annual stipend of £17,290 for three year, with the student responsible for paying their own fees. This studentship is part-funded by the ESF-Convergence programme 2007-2013. Agreement No: 11200NCO5.
New building practices including the switch from solid to liquid fuels, more insulation, greater sealing, use of fire doors etc has led to potentially less ventilation and increases in exposure of residents to indoor chemicals including moulds and pollen spores. Exposure to these may lead to increased risk of diseases including allergies and eczema.
This study aims to measure the severity of the problem in Cornwall and its impact on the health of the Cornish population as well as examine if public health messages can be used to reduce the impact. By collection of population health data specific groups within the population most at risk of exposure and negative health outcomes, who would most benefit from targeted health messages, can be identified.

Job description

The division of labor in visual processing between two relatively separate cortical pathways, a ventral and a dorsal stream, has been hotly debated in the last decades: is the separation along attributes (ventral ‘what’ vs. dorsal ‘where’) or along tasks (ventral perception vs. dorsal action). So far, behavioral studies using motor tasks known to rely on the dorsal stream have yielded ambiguous results.
In this NWO project, you will develop novel motor and perceptual tasks involving visual illusions that can be exploited in a neuroimaging environment in order to test between these models of visual information processing. This project is a collaboration with Pieter Medendorp of the Donders Institute of the Radboud University; the neuroimaging experiments will be performed in his lab in Nijmegen.
