You need sufficient financial resources / sponsorship for the whole program period of three years. You have different options, and depending on your choice different application documents and procedures are required:

  1. ZEF admits qualified participants with own funds or stipends from third parties, such as their government or an international sponsor. You need approximately 900 Euros per month for a decent living in Germany. Currently, ZEF raises no tuition for the program, but adequate research funds of up to 20,000 Euros must be secured. If you plan to study with own funds or you already have a scholarship award, you may submit an application at any time. In such a case, you have to submit a complete application (No. 1 - 11 on the list of required application documents).
You need a financial support, if you do not have enough own financial funds or a scholarship award yet. Sources for scholarships depend on your origin, discipline and research area:
There are two types of scholarships directly available at ZEF:
  1. Candidates from developing countries can apply for a scholarship by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). A number of those DAAD scholarships, which are sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), are directly available at ZEF. If you apply for such a scholarship, you have to submit the application documents 1 to 12, except No.11 from the list of required application documents directly to ZEF. The deadline for such an application is August 31, every year, for the intake in October of the following year.
  2. You can also apply for a PhD position in one of ZEF's projects. In this case, the topic, region and discipline of the research is determined by the project. You can only apply if there is such a position announced on ZEF's website (look under SERVICES/ VACANCIES). If you apply for such a scholarship, you have to submit the application documents 1 to 10 directly to ZEF (click here for the list of required application documents).

Scholarships not available directly at ZEF:
  1. The German Ministry of External Affairs has also bilateral agreements with many countries (not only developing countries) for DAAD scholarships. One type of these DAAD scholarships, the so called "Government Scholarships", are cofinanced and have special conditions. Those DAAD scholarships are of special interest for candidates from countries, which are not officially seen as developing countries, like the GUS, Central Asian and European states and others. If you want to apply for such a scholarship, you have to be at first accepted to the doctoral program at ZEF and get the provision of a supervisor. Then, you can submit your application for a DAAD-scholarship to a German Embassy or DAAD office in your home country. Please, ask the German embassy in your country for the details and the deadline of application. You may submit an application for a supervisor at any time to ZEF (click here for the list of required application documents. Here application documents No. 1 to 10 are needed). Please have in mind that we need at least 4 weeks to decide upon your supervision.
  2. You can also apply for a scholarship from any other foundation and sponsor. Also in this case, you have to be at first accepted to doctoral program at ZEF and get the provision of a supervisor before you can apply for a scholarship. You may submit an application (click here for the list of required application documents. Here application documents No. 1 to 10 are needed) for a supervisor at any time. Please have in mind that we need at least 4 weeks to decide upon your supervision. Please indicate to which sponsor / foundation you want to apply.
